Sermon Notes
Do Not Misuse God's Great Name
Exodus 20:7
“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name.”
God’s name is holy, sacred, worthy of respect.
Be both aware of and careful how you use My name.
Some that misuse God’s name are simply uninformed.
When you use one’s name you bring into essence who they are.
Leviticus 24:10-16: The story of one who blasphemed God’s name.
Jesus’ first request as He taught His disciples to pray was that men everywhere revere God’s name (Matthew 6:9).
Some that misuse God’s name are simply out of control.
The tongue is hard to control (James 3) and what comes out is a reflection of one’s heart (Matthew 12:35).
Ephesians 4:29; 5:4; Proverbs 23:7
Some that misuse God’s name are simply unsaved.
You cannot speak of one you love in an unkind, casual way.
Saved people revere God’s name.
While there are sins that result in a temporary payoff, what is the payoff for foul, godless language?
This I know: God will have the last word –
“I will not leave him unpunished Who takes My name in vain.”
“Don’t misuse God’s great name.”
In your heart, honor God as God, and your language will always reflect that very thing.
