Sermon Notes
The Call to Lead #1
I Timothy 3:1-3
“Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task.”
An important calling – “whoever aspires”
A limited calling – “if any man aspires to be”
A compelling calling – “if one aspires, he desires”
A responsible calling – “the office of an overseer”
A worthy calling – “he desires a noble work”
A demanding calling – "desires a noble work”
“Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness.”
Above reproach – no valid accusation of consistent sinful behavior
Faithful to his wife – a one-woman man / devoted to one woman
Temperate – wineless / alert, watchful, vigilant, clearheaded
Self-controlled – well-disciplined / ability to order priorities
Respectable – one who has his act together
Hospitable – touching those outside of Christian circles
Able to teach – has the ear of those he leads
Not given to drunkenness – not a drinker / reputation for drinking
