Sermon Notes

The Truth and Nothing but the Truth

Exodus 20:16

Lying is wrong:

  • Even if others are doing it

  • Even if you benefit from it

  • Even if you don’t get caught

  • Even if others are doing worse

Four Lies that Show Up in Our Lives:

  • The Dirty Dog Lie – Outright Lie

  • The Distorted Lie – Stretching the Truth

  • The Deceptive Lie – Half Truth

  • The Dumb Lie – Silent Lie

Declaring War on Lying:

  • Be Ruthless with Yourself (I Cor. 9:27)

  • Invite Accountability

  • Remember What Lying Does to God

Questions to Consider:

  1. When was the last time I told a lie—of any kind—and did I justify it or confess it?

  2. Am I more concerned with protecting my image or honoring God with my  integrity?

  3. Who in my life has permission to call me out when I’m not being truthful—  and do I  actually listen when they do?

  4. How does my dishonesty—no matter how small—affect my relationship  with God, and do I care enough to change?

(Lev. 19:11; Prov. 6:16-19; 12:22; 13:5; 14:5; 17:7; John 8:44; Eph. 4:29;  Revelation 21:8)
