Class Notes

Bible Warfare (BW) for the Land

  • BW should be seen in light of Redemption.

  • BW is an admixture of grace and judgment.

  • The whole earth is God’s!

  • God reclaims Canaan, which is His, from the peoples of  the world for His chosen people.

  • The sin of the “Canaanites” was full. Therefore, it was  their land to lose.

  • As promised, if Israel’s sin becomes full, it was theirs to  lose (but not without a faithful remnant).

  • The promise given to Israel is rooted in God’s promise to  Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  • The Lord’s triumph through warfare shows him as the  “one true living God” whose claim on the world is  absolute.

  • The battles for Canaan are not to be compared to wars  of conquest by civil governments.

  • Once in the land, Israel was to be a “commonwealth  faithful to the rule of God.”

  • Once in the Land, Israel was to be witness to the world  of the one true God, therefore, a blessing to all other  nations.

  • Once in the land, if Israel “broke covenant” with God,  their rights to possession of the land was forfeited.

Choosing “blessing” or “curse”:

  • Deuteronomy 28:1-14,  BLESSINGS

  • Deuteronomy 28:15-43, CURSE

  • Deuteronomy 28:58-68, PLUCKED & SCATTERED

Coffman’s on Deuteronomy 28:  [p. 316,317]

“…removal from the Promised land is stated as one of  the penalties of the repudiation of God’s  Covenant….following the Babylonian captivity some  Jews did return……..they were protected against  annihilation by God’s providence until the coming of  Christ…
